Shedd Aquarium - The World's Aquarium

Shedd Aquarium is the World's Aquarium. Opened in 1929, it is one of the oldest public aquariums in the world. Shedd has a rich history. Its history spans decades, and it was created by people like you, who continue to drive World's aquarium into the 21st century.

The Shedd Aquarium, located on Chicago's Museum Campus, is the world's largest indoor aquarium with more than 8,000 aquatic animals representing more than 700 species from all parts of the world. The Caribbean Reef, teaming with bright, colorful new corals and more than 60 species of animal, includes bonnet head sharks, southern stingrays, angelfish and a hawksbill sea turtle. Divers hand-feed sharks, sea turtles and eels at scheduled times during the day. The Marine Mammal Presentation, presented several times each day, features animal-care staff interacting with the dolphins and whales as they dive, spy hop and walk on their tails.

Shedd Aquarium offers a special event for 3-5 year-old preschoolers - "Tots on Tuesdays". This event features a full day of activities, including story times, crafts, animal touch programs, videos, costumed characters, dancing and singing.

Dining options at Shedd Aquarium include the Bubble Net Food Court offering pizza, sandwiches, burgers and more, Sounding Restaurant with full table service, wine and cocktails in a casual setting, and Mrs. Field's Cookie House featuring cookies, brownies, cold beverages and coffee. You can also visit the gift shop for souvenirs, jewelry, home decor and more.

Shedd also offers Habitat Chats for visitors to learn about the aquatic world and its inhabitants in an informal setting. Learn about what they eat, how Shedd Aquarium cares for them and more about their natural habitats. Aquarium and Oceanarium chats are scheduled in a variety of habitats; locations are posted daily throughout the Aquarium. Another feature, Animal Encounters, gives you a chance to look at, learn about and touch such critters as a Chilean rose tarantula, leopard gecko, African bullfrog, red-tailed boa, or king snake.

The Aquarium contains several exhibits; the most notable are the Caribbean Reef and the Oceanarium. The Caribbean reef contains about 70 species of animals, including sharks and stingrays. You get a good overview of all the life in the Caribbean reef from behind the glass windows, and several cameras inside the 90000 gallons large aquarium allow you to see the animals up close. The fish are fed 5 times daily by divers who give the audience some information about the animals while feeding them. The huge (3 million gallon) oceanarium, gives an overview of the Sealife at the pacific northwest coast. The oceanarium contains Beluga whales, sea otters and seals, but the stars here are the Pacific white-sided dolphins. Shows are scheduled during the day. Thanks to the massiveness of the aquarium, the dolphins have quite some room to show off their speed to the spectators. You can watch them from the windows at the lower levels or during the shows from the 'amphitheater'.
